In-Service Software Upgrades
Another feature that is very useful is the idea of an In-Service Software Upgrade (ISSU). This is a software upgrade that allows you to move to a new JUNOS release with no disruption in the control plane, and little if any disruption in the forwarding plane. This feature is supported only on dual RE platforms, including the VC, and the REs must be running the same JUNOS software version before ISSU. Lastly, in order for this feature to work, GRES and NSR must also be enabled.
Warning
As in the NSR warning, ISSU is currently not supported on EX Series devices, but the word is that it is planned.
Perform ISSU by issuing the following steps:
Enable GRES and non-stop active routing. Verify that the REs and protocols are synchronized.
Download the new software package from the Juniper Networks website and then copy the package to the router.
Issue the request system software
in-service-upgradecommand on the master RE.
During ISSU, both the master and backup will be upgraded to the new versions of the JUNOS software. Since this is not yet supported on the EX, we won’t include additional details here.
