When I went on the O’Reilly platform, I was astonished to find all the books there, plus live events and sandboxes so you could play around with the technology.I’ve been on the O’Reilly platform for more than eight years. I use a couple of learning platforms, but I'm on O'Reilly more than anybody else. When you're there, you start learning. I'm never disappointed.I'm always learning. So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Physical or virtual?
Deciding whether to set up a physical or virtual lab (or a combination thereof) depends on your budget and available resources. Penetration testing can get quite expensive depending on the tools used, especially if opting for commercial tools, but it doesn't have to be, considering the many available open source tools in Kali Linux as well as those available on GitHub and GitLab.
As a professional penetration tester, I use two physical machines. One is a laptop outfitted with a 1 TB hard drive, 16 GB of DDR4 RAM, an i7 processor, and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 graphics card, outfitted with three virtual machines including the main OS (Kali Linux 2018.2).
