Directory Services (OpenLDAP)
OpenLDAP is an open source implementation of the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, and is available at its home page at http://www.openldap.org. A directory contains information about an organization’s resources, typically personnel, but can also contain information about other resources, such as computers, and printers as well. LDAP is extensible through its support for attributes that can hold arbitrary data, such as names, phone numbers, addresses, and photos. Those who are interested in learning more about LDAP and OpenLDAP can refer to LDAP System Administration by Gerald Carter (O’Reilly).
To restrict access to this information and to control who can modify the directory, LDAP servers require authentication. OpenLDAP uses the Cyrus SASL library to provide this authentication service. Therefore, before installing OpenLDAP, you will need a working Cyrus SASL installation.
