Using the tput command can greatly enhance the look of, and the control you can have over, your scripts. Using colours gives that slight professional edge to them. Beware of overdoing the colours; they may look good to you, but not to a user who has to keep looking at your screen when using your script. Being able to use and read control characters can give your scripts more flexibility, especially on user input by key selection.
