Device control refers to a situation where the kernel needs to change properties of the interface on its own initiative, or in response to a user action. It can then use either operations exposed through the struct net_device_ops structure, as discussed, or use another control tool, ethtool, which requires the driver to introduce a new set of hooks, which we will discuss in the next section. Conversely, the status reports the state of the interface.
