Luminaires

9.1   Luminaires – General

Over the years many different types of luminaire have been developed to satisfy specific needs of lighting:

  • Fresnel spotlights (soft-edged projectors)
  • Softlights, including fluorescent lights
  • Dual source
  • Hard-edged projectors, including follow-spotlights
  • Cyclorama top lights
  • Ground row
  • PAR lights
  • Intelligent lights (moving lights)
  • Open-faced luminaires.

Luminaires are often referred to as a ‘hard’ or ‘soft’ depending on the type of shadow they produce, i.e. hard-edged or soft-edged. Hard sources are point sources, i.e. small area sources (Figure 9.1) and:
