Lighting in the Real World

15.1   Basic Observations

So far we have considered formal presentations, with the lighting aim to produce pictures with an open and honest look. In the real world the need is to light in a given environment or perhaps to create a particular environment. Generally, the aim is to create the illusion of reality, not necessarily reality. For example, a domestic interior may be lit with a single central overhead light. If one used only this lighting treatment or created the same effect it would be less than satisfactory, resulting in very steep ‘toppy’ lighting.
