Lighting Standards

‘Compromise’ is one of the most overworked words in television. However, despite having to make compromises there is still a need to maintain good lighting standards. The aim is to achieve the lighting required by the Director within budget and within the given timescale. Good lighting or ‘when it looks right’ will be when you see on camera the picture which you visualised at the planning stage.

One of the difficult decisions is knowing when to stop making lighting adjustments (lighting ‘tweaks’) – a point will be reached where further tweaks will be to the detriment of the lighting. Rather like water colour painting – many a painting has been spoilt through not stopping when it looks right!
