Selection and Employee Turnover

Whereas recruitment’s primary purposes are to identify and attract a qualified candidate pool, selection is the process of choosing the right candidate for the right job. In other words, selection is about fit.

Extensive research has shown that a person’s fit with the organization and job can reduce the odds of subsequent turnover. As early as 1991, research by Charles O’Reilly and his colleagues1 demonstrated that individuals who did not fit well in their jobs terminated their employment sooner, on average, than those employees who fit their jobs better.
