Acknowledging the importance of the maritime sector to international trade, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) established new security measures following the events of 9/11 to ensure the safety of maritime ports and cargo. These measures are outlined in the International Ship and Port Facility (ISPS) Code, which entered into force on July 1, 2004.
