Network Architecture
HiperLAN/2 has two basic operation modes: centralized mode and direct mode. Centralized mode is used to operate HiperLAN/2 as an access network via a fixed access point (AP). All data transmitted or received by a mobile terminal passes the access point or centralized controller, even if the data exchange is between mobile terminals associated to the same access point or centralized controller.
In direct mode, an additional capability for direct link communication is provided. This mode is used to operate HiperLAN/2 as an ad-hoc network without relying on a cellular network infrastructure.
