10.6. Final Remarks
The description presented in this chapter clearly shows that this field of application of FOSs has enough room to grow. Still, a lot of work has to be done to prove that this optical technology has (or not!) clinical and commercial potential for the biomechanical and biomedical monitoring market. Some research achievements have been made to demonstrate the potential of FOSs for in vivo biomechanical monitoring.
However, several technical issues still need to be overcome, such as cross-sensitivity to other physical measurands (e.g., temperature), as well as more cost-efficient optical signal processing units.
