A buffer is a consecutive segment in the system memory which is assigned to the application to store information based on the data type. A buffer overflow or overrun occurs when the application buffer is not properly managed by the program and assigns more data than the buffer can handle. The result of this is buffer corruption or allowing the attackers access to the buffer.
Buffer overflow attacks can be controlled by following coding standards and clearing the variable values and objects within the program after their usage. Running buffer cleanup programs on a scheduled basis also helps in restricting this vulnerability and improving application performance.
