From textures to temperature and vibrations to slippage, our sense of touch serves as the mechanical interface between our bodies and the physical world. This same capability can also be harnessed to provide an added sense of realism to computer-based simulations. To understand the application of tactile sensorial feedback capabilities within virtual and augmented reality simulations, it is important to first understand how we actually feel the real world.
