The transition of virtual and augmented reality from specialty systems in research labs and high-end defense applications to the general consumer marketplace is raising profound legal, social, and ethical issues. From product safety to the increasing violence and realism of first-person games and even immersive pornography, the introduction of these technologies into the broader population is certain to have dramatic implications. In this chapter we explore a number of these issues, noting areas of concern and some of the serious challenges faced in the course of their increasingly widespread use.
