From 2010, an annual image classification competition has been run called the ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC). The image set consists of over 14 million images that have been labelled with over 1,000 categories. Without this dataset, there would not be the huge interest in deep learning that there is today. It has provided the stimulus for research in deep learning through the competition. The models and weights learnt on the Imagenet dataset have then been used in thousands of other deep learning models through transfer learning. The actual history of ImageNet is an interesting story.
