It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
How it works...
There are essentially two AICs that can be used in the context of mixed models. The first one is the marginal AIC (mAIC) and the second one is the conditional AIC (cAIC). The former is useful when we are interested in the fixed effects part, whereas the latter is useful when our interest lies in the conditional predictions for each group.
