Introduction

The universe of visual effects is infinite. There are an unlimited number of techniques and an unlimited number of approaches for each of those techniques. To truly master visual effects takes a lifelong dedication to the study of visual effects as well continuous practice in art and design. This text attempts to classify most visual effects into four categories: in-camera, in-material, simulations, and particle effects. Most visual effects fall within these categories but there are some effects that do not quite fit within these labels. This chapter identifies those effects and gives them classifications of their own.
