Abstract

The area of cryptocurrencies has been fundamentally transformed by blockchain technology. Blockchain is a novel and effective way to store information, perform transactions, and so on, but when it comes to adopting blockchain-based cryptocurrencies, the security and privacy of blockchains are constantly at the forefront of the argument. There is a misbelief that cryptocurrencies are an anonymous means of payment. The blockchain is a public, fully transparent ledger, so anybody can browse the data of a blockchain using a block explorer and see the amount, at what time, and what address transferred money. But even on a fully transparent ledger, we can transact on blockchain privately using an address, as an address doesn’t carry any information about its owner. We can say that addresses act like pseudonyms. This chapter will provide a comprehensive review of blockchain-based cryptocurrency security and privacy.
