In today’s globally aggressively competitive business transactions, operations, and R&D environments, intangible assets are consistently in play. If one were to randomly engage 10 business persons and ask them to explain or give examples of intangible assets, experience suggests the following outcome: 2 individuals would define intellectual property in lieu of any reference to intangible assets, 6 individuals would admit little or no operational familiarity with intangible assets, and the remaining 2 would likely frame intangible assets and intellectual property as being synonymous. This chapter helps distinguish intellectual property and intangible assets.
