11.1 Introduction
The complex systems that make up any city all revolve around one common aspect: the people. Today, 54% of the human population live in urban areas, and by 2050 that number is expected to increase to 66% [1]. In the future, a smart city will have applications, both individual and societal, that are tailored to the people living within them and help to improve healthcare, transportation, energy use, and the lives of people within the city. However, in order to include the city's people in these applications, such applications must be able to sense and monitor the people themselves through human context sensing.
