Preface

As world urbanization continues to grow – 66% of the world's population is projected to be urban by 2050 – there is a worldwide trend toward the establishment of smart cities. This trend not only opens up significant opportunities but also creates many physical, social, behavioral, economic, and infrastructural challenges. To address these challenges in implementing smart cities, increased understanding of how to design, adapt, and manage smart cities in an intelligent and effective way is essential.

This edited book, Smart Cities: Foundations, Principles, and Applications, aims to present the scientific foundations and engineering principles needed to achieve the vision of smart and connected communities (S&CC), including smart cities, and various innovative applications and services to enable S&CC. Accordingly, this book is organized into three parts: foundations, principles, and applications.

Foundations: After presenting the opportunities and challenges of S&CC (Chapter 1), this part presents various scientific foundations of S&CC, including big data analytics (Chapter 2), multiscale computing (Chapter 3), communications and networking (Chapter 4), citizen science and crowdsourcing (Chapter 5), real-time control and adaptation (Chapter 6), mobile services (Chapter 7), and ecosystem services (Chapter 8).

Principles: This part presents various engineering principles of S&CC, including data-driven modeling (Chapter 9), future Internet architecture (Chapter 10), context-aware ...
