We will use Apache Directory Server (Apache DS), an extendable, modern, and embeddable LDAP server, to showcase LDAP authentication. It is written purely in Java. Apache DS comes as a standalone LDAP server. While working with it, you will need some sort of LDAP Browser to visualize and manipulate the data.
However, Apache provides another tool, called Apache Directory Studio, which is an Eclipse-based application. It ships with Apache DS and LDAP Browser, in a single bundle. It was designed particularly for Apache DS; however, you can use it with any LDAP server (like OpenLDAP).
