What is LDAP?

LDAP is an industry standard for accessing and managing hierarchical information stored in a directory structure over the network. LDAP has been in use for quite a long time. Nowadays, it is mainly used to build an authentication system; however, that is by no means its only purpose. LDAP can also be used to store any kind of information that needs to be accessed centrally (for example, emails or contact information in an organization).
