An index is a group of documents having a similar structure. You can define an index for employee data, another for salary data, and so on. An index can be identified by a name associated with it. An index name is used for indexing, searching along with CRUD operations for the documents it comprises. You can define as many indexes as you want. An index is always independent of another index. A group of indexes is referred to as indices in Elasticsearch.
