The argument about whether leaders are born or made has been answered resoundingly by the market. Currently, the leadership development, executive coaching, and management training markets account for several billion dollars of corporate expense. Recent estimates about the executive coaching market alone suggest that it has already topped $1 billion and is still growing (Sherman & Freas, 2004). Clearly there is a widespread belief that leadership can be taught, that emerging leaders can learn, and that organizations can develop individual leaders.
