The common mode operating input voltage is normally different from the absolute
maximum input voltage range, which is usually equal to the supply voltage. If you
exceed the maximum input voltage without current limiting then you are likely to
destroy the device; this can quite easily happen inadvertently, apart from circuits
connected to external inputs, if for instance a large value capacitor is discharged
directly through the input. Even if current is limited to a safe value, overvoltages on the
