6 COST STRUCTURES IN PROFESSIONAL TEAM SPORTS
There are essentially two main costs when referring to the finances of professional sport teams: player salaries and player transfer fees (for those sports that have a transfer market). Let us first consider player salaries. How does a player earn money? And what cost does that have to the team that owns the rights to that player? There are simple answers to both of those questions but when we consider the highest earners and factor in multiple sports, the picture does become a little more nuanced. For context, we provide the top ten highest earning athletes in the world for 2021 in Table 6.1.
