It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

Equal Cost Multipath (ECMP)
In Figure 8.1 the route from Host V to Host Z is shown as VFGKZ, but it should
be noted that the route VFJKZ is the same length and so the same cost as the
chosen path. When the routing protocol discovers it has two equally short
paths it selects one by some arbitrary process~usually selecting the first one
discovered.
However, equal cost multipath (ECMP) routes offer a simple way to share
the network load by distributing traffic onto other paths. Sophisticated systems
may examine the load on the system and route traffic accordingly. ...
