Chapter 2
Culture and Change
Executive Summary
If business transformations could be achieved solely through the replacement of old technology with newer technology, they wouldn't be so difficult and they wouldn't pose so many problems. Successful transformation strategies are all about people and culture. A transformation that doesn't transform behaviors widely and generally across the enterprise isn't really much of a transformation.
In this chapter, we focus on the experiences of CIOs who led transformational efforts that were designed primarily to change the culture of their organizations. In many respects, these kinds of cultural transformations are more difficult than transformations driven mostly by the need for rapid technological change. When the culture of the IT organization changes, relationships between IT and the rest of the company are altered, fundamentally and profoundly.
