Westwood Studios’ Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty1 (1992; Commodore Amiga, PC, RISC OS, Sega Genesis) is widely regarded as the first modern real-time strategy (RTS) game. Although certainly not the first, it was highly successful and influential, inspiring later games that eventually became one of the major genres of the industry.
