Ackermann, Wilhelm (1896–1962) A German mathematician and logician who earned his Ph.D. at Göttingen. He helped David Hilbert with Principles of Mathematical Logic. He is perhaps best known among some computer scientists for the Ackermann function, which is sometimes used as a speed benchmark. He remained in Germany during the war and ended up as a high school teacher.
Aiken, Howard Hathaway (1900–1973) An American physicist educated at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He earned a Ph.D. from Harvard and was the conceptual designer of the Harvard Mark I Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator.
