CS-based joint source-channel coding scheme has continuous rate-distortion perfor-
mance in a noisy Gaussian channel. This research is done in the context of wireless
sensor systems and the application of CS theory is rather “traditional,” that is, the
sources are highly sparse real-valued sensor readings and the CS decoding is based
on computation-intensive convex optimization. These schemes are not readily ex-
tended to the transmission of generic binary data seen in the current physical layer
of communications systems.
