The Google apps I present in this chapter may or may not appear on your phone, although most of them should. All part of Google Mobile Services (GMS), they’re made for the Android OS (operating system). If a covered app did not come installed on your phone — and you like what it offers — you can download it from the Google Play Store.
As I mention in Chapter 5, phone manufacturers and broadband carriers may add their own apps to your phone. Google can approve these apps, but they aren’t official Google (GMS) apps.
I believe that using GMS apps helps you keep your data reasonably safe and private. After all, iPhone users also have the App Store (the Apple version of the Play Store), but a good deal of the apps on their phones are native to the Apple ecosystem.
