Neuroscience. Technology-assisted learning. Double-loop learning. Informal, social, and incidental learning. International and cross-cultural learning issues. These terms, and others, spark interest and attention in the training and development field today.
But in this introductory chapter, I would like to focus on several issues. First is the need to get back to basics in an innovative way, and the ASTD Handbook is an important tool in that effort. Second is the need to devote more attention to values and ethics. Third is the need to focus on learning competence and learning climate and not just trainer competence.
