Appendix O MPEG-2 and DVB data tables

In addition to carrying packets representing video and audio, an MPEG-2 transport stream (TS) must convey information allowing the user and their receiver to access the available services/programmes. This data is in the form of a set of tables. The complex process of decoding a TS programme is illustrated in Figure App.O.1.

MPEG-2 PSI (program specific information) mandatory tables

PAT (program allocation table): Carried in packets with PID = 0. Links allocated programme number (0–65 535) with PID (packet identifier) of packets carrying the PMT for each TS programme.
