Melle Hammer, an extraordinary designer from the
Netherlands, creates books, posters, opera sets, short
films, tickets, invitations, logos, and even puppet the-
aters. In his words, “The moment I need a portfolio
to introduce my work to a prospect, I give a general
view of what keeps me busy, and show a series of
similar projects (similar in subject or similar in the
tools used).” This ensures that the content is always
up to date and connected with the viewer’s interests.
Additionally, because a finished piece fails to communi-
cate a project’s budgetary or time constraints, he likes
to explain the setting in which something was made
whenever possible.
To create these custom portfolios, shown above and on
page 107, Hammer makes black-and-white photocopies
of selected images on inexpensive paper, puts it all
together with a simple binding, and adds a short intro-
duction. Its dimensions are 8.2" 11.75" (21 29.8 cm),
and despite the inferior reproduction quality, the work
holds up. He likes to present design work without
“seducing or polishing the parts.”

Hammer created an unbound book called Klap as
a personal typographic exercise. He set himself the
challenge of making a book using the single word Klap
(Dutch for clap) to represent the physical soundscape
of an applauding audience. Hammer produced this
piece as part of an exhibition in France, not as a project
for a specific client.

Instead of keeping a single formal portfolio, he sends
a selection of work specific to the client or type of
design requested.

Rebeca Mendez, a designer and a professor at UCLA Design | Media, produced and
presented this portfolio to the Cooper-Hewitt award committee. The collection
includes her most recent work, which is largely brand research and reports for such
companies as Mattel, IBM, Motorola, and UCLA. It also features her beautifully
designed art catalogs for Bill Viola and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.
Each year, several finalists receive the honor of being selected for the Cooper-Hewitt’s
National Design Award. Mendez gathered the materials she needed to show and
found a box at the art store large enough to accommodate the work. The manufac-
tured linen covered box worked perfectly because it is simple, well made, and not
overly intrusive.
