Sara Eisenman began her career designing books at Random House for
Pantheon, Knopf, and the Modern Library. In 1984, she was appointed Art
Director for Alfred A. Knopf jackets. Upon leaving New York City in 1987,
she was appointed Art Director of trade and reference jackets and covers
at Houghton Mifflin Company. In 1993, she became Creative Director at
Beacon Press, where she art-directed and designed book interiors, jackets,
and everything book-related for eleven years.
Eisenman continues to teach and design a wide variety of materials and
has received design awards from the AIGA (American Institute of Graphic
Arts), the American Association of University Publishers, the Society of
Illustrators, Print, the Art Directors Club, and many others. She has taught
at Harvard University, Columbia University Publishing Course, the Radcliffe
Publishing Course, and Rhode Island School of Design. She has lectured
at Stanford, Harvard, and Columbia Universities and at meetings of the
American Association of University Presses. She lives in Milton,
Massachusetts.
I am particularly grateful to the following people, who have helped me find
so many designers and amazing portfolios: Nancy Skolos and Tom Wedell,
Margaret Morton, Janet Odgis, Rebeca Mendez, Louise Fili, Adrien Pelletier,
Melle Hammer, Kyle Cooper, Chris Pullman, Deenie Yudell, Mimi Jung,
Andrew Yoon, Lorraine Wild, Min Wang, Clive Challis, Isaac Tobin, Patricia
Duque Campos, and Elizabeth Resnick. A special thanks to Alvin Eisenman
and David Godine, who cheered me on with their support and ideas. I’d
also like to thank my editor, Kristin Ellison, who invented the idea of this
book and offered me the opportunity to be a writer.
