Scatterplots
Figures 1.1 through 1.3 are scatterplots. A scatterplot (which Microsoft
Excel calls an XY chart) places one variable on the Y- axis and the other
on the X- axis. It then plots pairs of values as dots, with the X variable
determining the position of each dot on the X- axis and the Y variable
likewise determining the position of each dot on the Y- axis. A scatterplot
is an excellent way to begin your investigation. A quick glance will tell
you whether the relationship is linear or not. In addition, it will tell you
whether the relationship is strong or weak, as well as whether it is positive
or negative.
