Work metrics
Now that we know how to take measurements of our cloud-native components, we need to categorize the measures so that we can turn this data into actionable information and to help understand what measurements should be taken. The first category is work metrics. Work metrics represent the user-visible output of the system. They tell us what the system is doing from the external perspective. When we discuss alerting, we will see that a degradation of work metrics represents symptoms of an underlying cause. Work metrics include the rate of throughput for a unit of time, the rate of errors, and the performance or duration/latency of the unit of work.
