Tokenization
Tokenization is an interesting alternative to encryption that works for some types of data. A token is a generated value that replaces and references the real value. It cannot be used in place of the real value. It can only be used to look up the real value. A tokenized value has the advantage that it resembles a real value. An example of a tokenized credit card number is 4111-XXXX-YYYY-1111. The tokenized value can be securely used throughout the system because it is not the real number. For example, this value could be securely presented to a user in a user interface and recognized as representing a credit card number.
