Resource metrics
The second category of measurements is resource metrics. Resource metrics represent the internal workings of the system. They tell us at a lower level what the system is doing to produce the user-visible output. When we see a degradation of work metrics, our resource metrics help us determine the underlying cause of the user-visible symptoms. Resource metrics include the percentage of capacity that is utilized, the extent to which the resource is saturated with queued, waiting, or throttled work, and the rate of errors produced by the resource. Collecting resource metrics is also commonly referred to as the USE Method (http://www.brendangregg.com/usemethod.html) for utilization, saturation, and errors.
