1.4 Roles in the Integrated Database Environment

Many individuals or groups are involved in the operations of a large database system. They play different roles, depending on the way they interact with the database, as depicted in Figure 1.5.

  • End users. The database is designed, created, and maintained to serve the information needs of end users, who use the data to perform their jobs or to accomplish other tasks. Regardless of the elegance of the database design or the sophistication of the hardware and software used, if the database does not provide adequate information to users, it is a failure. Ultimately, it is the users who judge the success of the system. Users can be categorized according to the way they access data, as follows:
