As stated at the beginning of this chapter, the objective of normalization is to find a set of relations that are a faithful model of the enterprise. The process of normalization eliminated some problems of data representation and resulted in a good schema for the database. There are two different processes that could be used to develop the set of normalized relations, called analysis and synthesis. Most designers choose instead to start with an ER diagram and work from there rather than using either a pure analysis or a pure synthesis process.
