In the current world of access technologies, it is highly desirable to connect multiple hosts at a remote site through the same customer premises access device. It is also essential to provide access control and billing functionality in a manner similar to dialup services by using PPP. In many access technologies, the most cost-effective method to attach multiple hosts to the customer premises access device is through Ethernet.
