The topics covered in the previous chapter are largely concerned with exerting influence outside the organisational boundaries of the subsidiary. This is obviously crucial, but there is a risk of seeing the problem only as one where the capabilities of the subsidiary are underappreciated and where the focus is solely on encouraging others to see where it can add more value. This would miss the point that as well as reaching outwards to build support for the subsidiary’s ambitions, the organisation must also look inwards to realise where it must change if it is to fulfil the promise that it can add more value.
