3.2 Basic Operation of an Optical Disc Drive
Figure 3.1 illustrates the schematic operation of playback from optical recording media.
This fi gure shows the essential elements of an optical drive. Optical discs have land
areas and grooves imprinted on the surface that provide a signal to the playback head
when the head goes off track. This signal is used by the drive servo system to bring the
head back on track.
