Video cards and sound cards plug into expansion slots on your motherboard. On most modern motherboards, the expansion slots are called PCI express (PCIe).

The ‘PCIe x 1’ slots are for smaller devices such as ethernet and wifi network controllers or modems etc.
The ‘PCIe x 16’ slots are extremely fast and are for high end graphics cards like the one in the previous section.
The PCI slots are for sound cards and other types of cards.
