The BIOS is a small program stored in permanent ROM and is soldered directly onto the motherboard.

BIOS Stands for Basic Input Output System and is responsible for checking hardware components at bootup, called a power on self test (POST).

The BIOS also sets the boot sequence and will list drives the system will search in order, for an Operating System such as Windows.
