The London Stock Exchange primary market

Through its primary market in listed securities, the LSE has succeeded in encouraging large sums of money to flow annually to firms wanting to invest and grow. On its different markets, it has over 2,900 companies quoted with a total market value of over £4 trillion (i.e. four million million).

The vast majority of these companies raised funds by selling shares, bonds or other financial instruments through the LSE, either when they first floated or by issuing further shares in subsequent years. For example, newly listed UK firms on LSE’s Main Market raised new capital by selling over £9bn of shares in 2011.
